Süleyman Han Mosque was built on a very rugged area at the top of the Fortress of Van. The fundamental repair of the mosque was undertaken by Mimar Sinan during the Persia Campaign of Suleiman the Magnificent. In the Travelogue Evliya Çelebi stated that the top of the mosque was covered with a dome. The top cover system was first covered with a central dome to match the mosque form. However, the mosque was completely destroyed during the earthquake that took place in Van in 1655. In the later repairs, the top of the mosque was covered with a flat roof by using mudbrick building material on the mosque's main walls and following the traditional Van architectural construction technique. The mosque was completely taken down during the 1915-1918 Russian Occupation.
