The cupola, which is owned by the Sheikh Abdurrahman Baba Foundation, was officially registered as a "Monument" by the Regional Board Directorate for Cultural and Natural Heritage in Diyarbakır. It is generally believed that Sheikh Abdurrahman Gazi arrived at Van from Baghdad in the 15th century and serves as spiritual and ethic guide for the people of Van. The cupola turned into a cemetery area with the burials built around later. There is the Galip Pasha Cupola, which was built later, to the north of the cupola, the masjid to the east, the historical Fortress of Van to the south, and the Urartian temple, known locally as "Analı Kız", on the northern slope of the rock where the fortress is built.
