MONSTERIA OF SAINT THOMAS

Located in the Altınsaç Village of Van, the Monastery was built on the slope of a valley overlooking Lake Van. Dating before the 13th century, the church was repaired in 1671 and a square hall was attached to the western entrance of the church. Although all the monastery structures were destroyed, the church has survived to the present day in a very solid condition. The dome is projected outwards as a pyramidal cone on a high pulley. There are deep arms on both sides of the domed middle section. An internally semicircular apse with no external protrusion is present in the eastern part of the structure. The reason behind the extremely thick appearance of these walls, which ultimately form the four corners of the naos, is that they are fused with the buttresses on which the arches supporting the dome are placed.
