AKDAMAR ISLAND

The total coastal length of the Island, which is located within the borders of Gevaş district and has a surface area of approximately 163,753 square meters, reaches up to 3 kilometers. According to the common folk tale about the origin of the island's name, the Armenian abbot, who lives on the island back in the day, has a daughter named Tamara. A young shepherd falls in love with this girl. This young man swims to the island every night to meet Tamara. Tamara, on the other hand, waits for him with a lantern to manifest her spot at nightfall. The girl's father, who is aware of this act, goes down to the shore of the island on a stormy night with a lantern in his hand and constantly changes spots, causing the young man to swim in vain and lose his strength. Tired, the young shepherd screams "Oh Tamara" with his last breath and gets drowned. Hearing this, the girl immediately walks towards to the raging waters of the lake. From that day on, the island goes under the name of Ah Tamara!
